Characteristics and Applications

The design of the tapered roller bearing is quite unique. The raceways of the inner and outer rings, as well as the rollers themselves, are conical surfaces. The vertices of all these conical surfaces converge at a common point on the bearing's central axis

. This specific geometry enables the bearing to simultaneously withstand significant radial loads and unidirectional axial loads, making it particularly suited for handling combined loads where radial force is predominant.


Compared to ball bearings, the primary advantage of tapered roller bearings is their high load-carrying capacity, especially making them suitable for heavy-duty and shock load applications

. However, their maximum allowable rotational speed is generally lowerthan that of ball bearings. Furthermore, tapered roller bearings are separable, meaning the inner ring assembly (which includes the rollers and cage) can be installed separately from the outer ring. This feature offers significant convenience during equipment assembly, disassembly, and adjustment.
